Loughborough Design School epitomises excellence in the three strands of its activity – research, teaching and enterprise.

About us

Loughborough Design School exhibits excellence in the three strands of its activity: research, teaching and enterprise.

In the most recent UK-wide assessment of higher education research (RAE 2008), Design School staff had the highest Art and Design research profiles of any institution with 55 per cent rated as world leading, plus top rated scores from the Engineering panel.

Design School graduates are highly sought after, reflected in the excellent employability figures.

The third strand - enterprise – is embedded in all our activity, including ‘live’ student briefs from industry, commercialisation of graduate projects, and knowledge exchange activities with the public, private and third sector.

The School comprises 42 academic staff; 35 researchers; 50 PhD students; 13 technical staff; and 12 administrative support staff.

Facilities

The School benefits from state-of-the-art facilities since moving to a new purpose-built campus location in 2011.

Facilities include bespoke designed studios, research laboratories, prototyping workshops, teaching laboratories, lecture theatre/auditorium, offices and meeting rooms, IT labs and exhibition spaces.

The building houses the latest equipment for digital designing (including rapid prototyping and manufacturing), haptic modelling, water jet cutting, vehicle simulation, environmental chambers, subject preparation, movement simulation and analysis, surface-mount PCB development, water-jet cutting in addition to the usual workshops, laboratories and studio equipment and resources.
